Voluntary Return

If you decide to return voluntarily to your country of origin, you may do so at any stage of the asylum process as long as a deportation order had not been issued in your name and there is no police objection to you leaving the state. If you have no financial means/documentation of your own, you can contact the International Organization for Migration (IOM) who may be able to assist you to return home.

International Organization for Migration (IOM)

IOM is an independent international organisation working in the field of migration. IOM's main service areas worldwide include: assisted voluntary returns, counter-trafficking, labour migration, migration health initiatives, movements, mass information campaigns and technical cooperation. Since 2001 IOM in Ireland has assisted more than 600 persons from over 60 nationalities to go home.

How can IOM help you with your return home?

IOM can purchase airline tickets for you, arrange a suitable time for your journey, assist you with appropriate travel documentation and arrange for transit and arrival assistance if needed.

What are the benefits of IOM assistance?

When you travel with IOM, you travel in the same way as any other passenger (independently and without an escort). The reasons for your stay in Ireland remain confidential and are not shared with anybody outside the voluntary return process. If you return voluntarily and you have no outstanding criminal court proceedings, you may apply to  re-enter Ireland legally for the purpose of work, study, etc.
