Voluntary Return
If you decide to return voluntarily to your country of origin, you may do so at any stage of the asylum process as long as a deportation order had not been issued in your name and there is no police objection to you leaving the state. If you have no financial means/documentation of your own, you can contact the International Organization for Migration (IOM) who may be able to assist you to return home.
International Organization for Migration (IOM)
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), is an intergovernmental organisation. IOM headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland, and the organisation have offices in over 100 countries worldwide. IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. Since 2001 IOM in Ireland has assisted more than 2,300 persons from over 75 countries worldwide to return home.
How can IOM help you with your return home?
IOM can purchase airline tickets for you, arrange a suitable time for your journey, assist you with appropriate travel documentation and arrange for transit and arrival assistance if needed. IOM can also provide you with reintegration assistance, which is a small grant to help you settle back in your country of origin. This can be used for education or income generating purposes. The services of IOM are free and confidential.
What are the benefits of IOM assistance?
When you travel with IOM, you travel in the same way as any other passenger (independently and without an escort). The reasons for your stay in Ireland remain confidential and are not shared with anybody in your country of origin. Your passport will not be stamped when leaving Ireland. If you return voluntarily and you have no outstanding criminal court proceedings, you may apply to re-enter Ireland legally for the purpose of work, study, etc.
