- RIA has no involvement in decisions made by the International Protection Office or the International Protection Appeals Tribunal (IPAT) on applications for asylum.

- RIA has no integration function. This was assigned to the Integration Unit of the Office of the Minister for Integration (now the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration), in July 2007.
- RIA has no role in the provision of legal services for asylum seekers
- In the interest of privacy and security, RIA does not reveal the details of individual asylum seekers resident in its accommodation centres.
